Party Animals | Luke 5:27-38
I don't think it is common to think of Jesus in this way--but I believe, wholeheartedly, that Jesus liked to party. He enjoyed spending time and feasting, he attended weddings where the wine flowed (his wine! vinted from water, even!), and shared lunch with thousands of people. Parties were a big part of how Jesus' message of love was shared with so many.
Having fun is a vital part of not only being human, but being Christian. Not vice-ridden and self-harming fun, but a willingness to laugh and enjoy rather than any social interaction as a Christian needing to also be some spiritual transaction that results in conversion. When we are in our community as a church, we aren't going to get very far if every single thing we do is solely dedicated to somehow growing our worship attendance and increasing our funding sources.
When the church does an ice cream social, we should make sure we are enjoying ourselves! Just like I think Jesus made sure to enjoy himself when he feasted with all kinds of interesting people. People so interesting that more zealous religious followers turned up their noses or tried to outright condemn Jesus for it!
Christians can be party animals! And I am looking forward to the fun we will have together this Sunday at Morse Park, where we not only will worship outside in a beautiful setting, but where our kids can also play on the playgrounds, where we can have a nice light lunch and fellowship tgoether, and also share in some scrumptious watermelon in this beautiful Colorado summer weather! So far, the forecast is saying the High for that day will be 87 degrees. So wear shorts! Even better, bring a frisbee and lets have some fun together! I hope you will invite your friends and neighbors to share in this fun with us as we discuss why partying together is a crucial part of being good neighbors!
See you this Sunday. I might even be wearing shorts myself!
